Brown drowning in a sea of black

Black is one of my favorite colors to wear. It's slimming, it goes with just about everything, and it's a required color to like/wear if you're born into my family. Between my mom, sister, and I we could literally dress everyone in Wyoming in black. I'm thinking we deserve some sort of award for this but anyhow that's not the point of this story. And yes there is a point.

This was all before I started school, we will refer to this time as b.s. (before school or bullshit). At school I have to wear a uniform everyday. Ya, a uniform like a child. Guess what color my uniform is? We are required to wear a black shirt (with the school logo on it) and black pants or a black skirt (that has to be to your freaking knees, didn't realize I was going to grandma school).

Everyday. Every.single.day. Every.damn.day.

It's literally killing my creative soul. Like I said, b.s. I would wear at least one piece of black clothing almost every day but I never wore black head to toe. For some crazy reason if I did I would never do it more than one day in a row. Each morning when I get up my new game is to figure out how to dress up my black standard issue fatigues. I've used earring, scarves, bracelets, and headbands. But each day it's getting harder and harder to figure out how to put my personal spin on it. I miss all my clothes in my closet. I miss color. I miss my heels!

If you have any ideas for me that would be great because black is my uniform for the next year. I do have some solitude though because we can wear any color shoes we want as long as they are suede or leather. There are rules on the shoes we can wear as well and you shouldn't try to jack with this rule like I did or your teacher will yell at you in front of the entire class. School is not my favorite place right now in case you were wondering.

It's going to be a long black year for this brown girl.

I don't know if this is against the rules but I always feel better about clothes once they are tailored. It's just something about clothes that were MADE to fit MY body that I just LOVE. You could also find out if its ok to get your name embroidered on your uniform. If so Pick a color and go for it. Hope this helps!

I feel your pain... there's only so much I can do with scrubs :( No matter which way you spin it, they're ugly. Have fun with accessories, jewelry, nail polish (do they have a nail polish rule?) etc.

ugh, what a bummer :( i would not be a happy camper about this either!
i feel like i wear the same things every week as well right now, i refuse to buy any more maternity clothes.

Sounds like you have a good excuse to go shopping!

Boo to black! I felt the same way when I was wearing scrubs every single day. Smurf blue scrubs, to boot! Do you KNOW how hard of a color that is to accessorize with? I wish I could offer you more advice- but sads, I can't! Earrings, headbands, scarves.. that's all I got! I think someone may have said this already- but nailpolish? At least you can dress it up with SHOES! thank the lord, for sure.. I'd be rockin' some hot pink flats like no other.. Maybe fool that teach of yours and wear some scandalous brightly colored underthings.. that may help brighten that brown girl spirit amidst all that black! :) Happy Tuesday, girl!

Black is way better than any other color. Wear crazy under garments. My bra and panties always make me feel sexier!

Jeez! That's crazy! I am surprised they make y'all wear black seeing as how you are working toward this super creative profession! Good luck finding fun ways to dress your uniform up with color. Think of it this way... at least you won't ruin any of your cute clothes from color stains!! I've ruined so many clothes from getting color on them!

See, for me this would be great. I hate trying to figure out what to wear every day. And sadly I DO dress in all black probably once a week. Whatever, let's just say that my 9 month post partum body only fits into about 5 items of clothing. I'm sure that you need NO help from me, but I think you're doing what you can do, bringing the color in accessories and shoes. And just think, when school is o-vah, you can wear whatever your little heart desires every.single.day! Yippee!

Maybe a bright head band and red shoes!! I don't know. On the one hand it's nice not to worry about what to put on every day but on the other I agree that it would probably do something to my overall mood after a while.

I can totally relate except I'm stuck wearing the same horrible green scrubs to work everyday. But I try to accessorize with earrings, headbands, and nail polish. Maybe add in some fun but comfortable shoes?

I own more black clothing that any other color...I love black. But being forced to wear it, yeah that would suck. Hey, but at least it's a color you look good in though. Imagine if you were stuck wearing a completely unflattering color for a year!

Your dilemma reminds me of an episode I watched of the show Jerseylicious. Have you ever watched that show? Nothing but drama in a salon. The manager requires them to wear all black and they come in with outrageous outfits! You should watch it. Episode 5 of Season 2.
*I would add jewelry to your ensemble unless it interferes with your work.

I've noticed that a lot of salons have an all black wardrobe. What's with that? I feel like it's the worst color to chose because it shows everything....especially hair!

That's a tough one. Definitely just go for the hair accessories, maybe bright colored dangly earrings, and colorful shoes. :)

I worked at a place once where the "uniform" was black pants and some kind of solid collared shirt--that should could only be solid black, brown, white, or blue. There's only so much you can do with that. It HURT after awhile to get dressed!

What about socks? I lurve me some good old-fashioned argyle socks underneath my dress slacks at work. Some of my co-workers were like, "OH those are so cute! I have argyle socks and never knew when to wear them" and I was all, "Gf, please, when else would I wear hot pink and black argyle socks?!"

And nailpolish. A sassy mani makes me feel good EVERY time I see my fingers flying on the keyboard, writing client notes!

I'm right there with you. I wear black daily. I'm sure people at work think I have NO other pants or skirts or dresses. Oh well, screw them! I'll wear what I want! Ha!

I have the same issue with work and they even rule over accessories!

I love black... and lately, it's been all about grey! I have color obsessions and they last SO long!!

I was totally going to feel bad for you until I read that you can wear any color shoes. Spruce up that black with some hot pink pumps or purple/yellow, etc! See? You can still be a little bit of a rebel :)

Caroline said...

Rock the colored accessories and the colored shoes. It's the only thing that'll make the sea of black go away!

omg, she did not yell at you in front of everyone! oh gosh, i hate school. i would have cried but i wasn't very good being yelled at.

Aww that is a bummer, I feel your pain!

The place where I get my hair cut has everyone wear black too. But you can spice it up with fun jewelry!

Jax said...

Can you wear a colored tank top under your black shirt? That kinda peaks out underneath or at the neckline? That's an idea... *shrugs* You sound like you're doing everything I would... scarves, etc! I love black, too, but yeah, the head to toe thing.. not good.

OceanDreams said...

hi love - my advice would be to just grab something with color! go shopping and buy a few things that you have always thought you could wear but haven't made yourself do it. good luck and have fun! ;) oh and i wear black a lot too to slim down so you are not alone...
