My Sister's Birthday

This Saturday my baby sister turned 19. Being 9 years older than her (ugh, that makes me feel old!!) and quite the bossy sister I have always acted as more of a parental figure to her. I'm happy to say that now that she is getting older we are becoming more of friends and I'm feeling less of a need to baby her.

Personality wise we are polar opposite. She has always been more of a free spirit, breaking the rules and keeping our family on the very tips of our toes most days. If you tell her "no", she'll do it anyway. If you tell her "yes", she'll take it beyond that. She is strong, sassy, and smart. I'm fairly certain she got those last three traits from me. For all the good times we've had, we have shared a lot of bad as well. There have been days when I just want to slap her and explain how hard life is and others where I want to hug her and hide her from the world.

{"we had to use what we had so I'm turning 81 today"}

I don't think I have mentioned this yet but my sister and I started cosmetology school together back in January.If you follow me on Twitter you may have already figured this out. She ended up taking a leave from school for a month shortly after we started so we are no longer in the same class together but we ride to and from school together every day. It's been nice to have her to talk things through with or just have someone to vent to. Who knows, maybe one day we will open a salon together? Of course, only if I can be the boss.

Although no matter what happens between my sister and I the fact remains that we will always be sisters. So no matter how mad I get at her, no matter how many times she wants to push my buttons or lash out at me, no matter how competitive we are (I'd rather die than let her think she is the better hairstylist), no matter where our careers or lives take us, I will always be there for her. And above that I will always, always love and support her.

"I'm smiling because I'm your sister.
I'm laughing because there's nothing you can do about it."

Happy birthday to your sister. I am 8 years older than my youngest sister, and have the exact same relationship with her as you and your sister. There are some days when I just want to wring my sister's neck!! :)

Happy birthday to your sister! I know exactly how you feel- I'm heading home this week to celebrate my "little" brother's 20th birthday- he's 8 years younger than me! For a while, it felt almost as if we belonged to two separate families- and I can say without a doubt that it took a LONG TIME for us to become "friends.." And people say- "I bet you and your brother never fought.." ha! i'm sorry, but there's always fighting to be done with the front seat of the car and the radio are involved! :) we're such awesome older siblings!

Happy B Day to your sister! Sister's are great. I have found my relationship with my younger sis changing for the better as she got older too. The age gap distances you for a while and then it just brings you closer.

happy birthday to your sister! :)

i have to admit it that the older we get, the better our relationship gets. i think it is when you are older that you realize that there is no one in the world that you can turn to at any hour of the day than your sibling.
